Blooming Through Concrete

by Madhusudhan Sharma

₹80,000

This surreal artwork explores the conflict between urban development and nature. The flower and butterfly symbolise life and ecological balance, while the stairs inside the human figure represent progress. The flower shown on a mobile phone suggests that nature and fresh air are increasingly becoming experiences confined to the digital world. The polluted sun, buildings, and animals reflect the environmental cost of rapid urbanisation.

Description

This surreal composition reflects on how rapid urbanisation and technological development are changing our relationship with nature and the environment. At the centre of the artwork is a blank human figure, within which a series of stairs can be seen. The stairs represent progress, development, ambition, and the constant movement towards modernisation. However, the emptiness of the figure suggests that while humans continue to develop externally, something essential may be becoming absent from their relationship with the natural world.

A flower with a butterfly resting on it becomes an important symbol of natural life, beauty, fragility, and ecological balance. The butterfly represents the delicate presence of living organisms that depend on a healthy environment. In contrast, the flower is also shown within a mobile phone, suggesting a strange transformation: experiences that were once part of everyday life—fresh air, flowers, greenery, and the natural fragrance of the environment—are increasingly encountered through digital images and screens rather than directly.

The mobile phone therefore becomes a symbol of the digital world and technological mediation. Nature appears to be physically disappearing from our surroundings while remaining available as an image on our devices. The artwork questions whether future generations might experience nature more through screens than through direct contact with the living environment.

In the background, buildings and the expanding urban landscape represent the growth of cities and concrete development. The presence of cows within the urban surroundings further connects the work to the displacement of animals and the changing spaces they share with humans.

At the top, the rising sun appears blurred and distorted, suggesting the impact of pollution on the atmosphere. Instead of representing a clear and hopeful new beginning, the sun becomes a symbol of an environment affected by urban pollution and environmental degradation.

Through these surreal combinations of the flower, butterfly, human figure, stairs, mobile phone, buildings, animals, and polluted sun, the artwork presents a contrast between progress and loss. It does not reject development itself, but questions what happens when development moves forward without considering nature and other living beings. The work invites the viewer to reflect on whether technological and urban progress is truly complete when clean air, natural spaces, biodiversity, and direct human connection with nature are gradually being lost.

Composition analysis

The composition is arranged as a surreal layered urban landscape, combining natural, human, and technological elements. The blank human figure at the centre acts as the main focal point, while the stairs inside it create a strong vertical movement, symbolising progress and development. The flower and butterfly introduce an organic contrast against the geometric form of the figure and surrounding buildings.

The mobile phone at the top creates a visual connection between nature and technology, showing the flower as a digital image. The buildings and animals in the background establish an urban environment, while the polluted sun adds depth and reinforces the environmental theme. The use of overlapping cut-out forms, different textures, and contrasting organic and geometric shapes creates visual tension and gives the composition a fragmented, dreamlike quality.

Cultural significance

The artwork reflects the changing relationship between Indian urban society, nature, animals, and technology. The growing presence of buildings and concrete represents rapid urbanisation, while the flower, butterfly, and cow connect the work to India’s long-standing relationship with nature and living beings. The mobile phone symbolises today’s digital culture, where natural experiences are increasingly encountered through screens. The polluted sun highlights contemporary environmental concerns, encouraging reflection on development, ecological loss, and our responsibility towards nature.
