About the Artist
Madhusudhan Sharma is a contemporary visual artist based in Delhi whose work focuses on the complex and often overlooked relationship between urban development and non-human life. Through a multidisciplinary practice that includes printmaking, drawing, painting, and mixed media, Madhusudhan Sharma creates surreal, thought-provoking imagery that reflects on the displacement of animals and the environmental costs of modernization. Growing up amidst the chaotic urban sprawl of the city, Madhusudhan Sharma developed a deep awareness of how animals—especially cows, a symbol of both reverence and neglect in India—struggle to survive in spaces dominated by concrete and commerce. This lived experience informs a body of work that fuses the familiar with the absurd: animals are depicted as hybrids, intertwined with loudspeakers, machines, infrastructure, or other urban artifacts, acting as metaphors for forced adaptation and lost agency. With a strong conceptual foundation, Madhusudhan Sharma uses surrealism as a lens to critique societal norms and challenge the passive acceptance of cruelty masked as progress. Their work has been exhibited in galleries, group shows, and art spaces that center ecological and ethical concerns. Madhusudhan Sharma aims to use art as a form of quiet resistance and to spark deeper reflection on how we interact with and impact the lives of the voiceless beings around us.
Artist Statement
My art explores the often-ignored impact of urban development on animals and nature. Using printmaking, painting, and drawing, I highlight the harsh realities hidden behind the idea of "progress"—such as the suffering of animals, the destruction of natural spaces, and how cruelty is often accepted as normal. I’m especially inspired by the lives of animals, like cows, in fast-growing cities. These animals, once respected and central to our culture, are now pushed aside, used for profit, or completely forgotten. In my artworks, cows appear in surreal forms—fused with loudspeakers, buildings, shoes, or machines. These strange combinations represent the ways animals are forced to adapt to survive in man-made environments. I use surrealism to challenge how we usually see the world. Everyday objects—crosswalks, traffic lights, buildings—are rearranged in dream-like scenes that make us question what we’ve come to accept as normal. By placing animals in absurd or dystopian settings, I hope to spark emotional and ethical reflection in the viewer. Each artwork is like a quiet protest, questioning power, control, and our role in what’s happening. The careful and often time-consuming process of making art—regardless of the medium—mirrors the slow, lasting damage that urban systems inflict on ecosystems and living beings. This deliberate pace invites viewers to pause, reflect, and truly consider what they’re witnessing. In the end, my work isn’t just about animals—it’s about us. It asks us to reflect on how we live, what we value, and what we’re willing to ignore. I aim to create a ...
